[Producer information]
Part of a fellow winery project in Banyuls, Brno, southern France.
JOACHIM ROQUE Joachim Roque was born on August 18, 1986 in Collioure, next to Banyuls.
Because it is close to the sea, his father is a fisherman, and his mother's family owned a field, but instead of making wine they grew grapes and sold them to a cooperative. The 8.5 hectare field is located at an altitude of 250m, and even in the blazing sun, it retains a sufficient acidity.
The grapes are Grenache Noir, Carignan, Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc and Mourvedre.
When he discovered Brno and heard about this cooperative winery, he had an idea: maybe he could make wine himself? He decided to try it out, not on a large scale at first, but by converting only 0.6 hectares of grapes to organic farming, thinking that if he did it little by little, he could do it! While converting the fields to organic farming, he became a stagiaire (apprentice) in Brno in 2013, learning winemaking techniques thoroughly, and went independent in 2014.
The label features the town of Collioure, illustrated by his wife's friend.
They built their own winery in the town of Saint-André, which is located on a hill and slightly inland, about 20km northwest of the town of Banyuls-sur-Mer, where their nine caves are located at sea level.
The town is surrounded by even higher mountains and has a completely different atmosphere to Banyuls, with the air being much drier than the coastal town.
Since the 2011 vintage, all cuvées have been brewed at their own winery.
One of the reasons for the move was that the previous nine caves were too small for the winery and it was difficult to work there, meaning that they were unable to make the wine they wanted.
The second reason was that his vineyard is one of the larger private domaines in Banyuls, so he wanted to produce more wine from his own grapes.
With his career as a winemaker now spanning almost 10 years, he felt it was the right time to make a fresh start and go independent, and so he went completely independent from 9 Caves.
