[Producer information]
Martin Werner was born in Rheinhessen in 1993. The Werner family has been involved in winemaking for generations, and up until his grandfather's generation, they sold all of their grapes for sparkling wine.
Martin's father started brewing his own grapes. Martin was the second of three brothers, and his father was taciturn and strict, with an old-fashioned temperament, so he was raised strictly from an early age.
As a teenager and a student, he loved music and art, including guitar, drums and painting. He was also good at mathematics and wanted to become an architect so he could put his free-spirited ideas into practice.
However, before graduating, he was sent by his father to help with the harvest at a winery owned by an acquaintance, which led to a major change in his life and thinking. Realizing that he had the DNA of a vigneron within him, he worked as an intern at various wineries after graduation and began studying winemaking. In 2015 he studied at Gut Oggau, a natural wine maker in Austria, and in 2016 he studied at Matassa in France.
At that time, his father fell ill, and in the fall of 2016, after the harvest in Matassa, he returned to his parents' home. He harvested 3 hectares of his father's 7 hectares of land at his own pace, and began making his own wine for the first time with the 2016 VTG. (Mart is his nickname.)
Taking this opportunity, he officially took over part of his family's vineyard and began growing grapes and making wine using the knowledge he had gained through his training.
His goal is to make natural wines made from grapes grown in organic fields, fermented with natural yeast, and without the addition of antioxidants. His basic style is a wine that combines lightness and complexity with a natural, clear flavor. While he has his sights set on making classical Riesling in the future, he says that since he is still young, he wants to take risks with a free-spirited approach.
The vineyard that I inherited from my father at the first VTG in 2016 has now grown to a total of 4.5 hectares. The plot I inherited is a small hill at an altitude of 300m, with grapes planted 360 degrees around it.
The northern slope is planted with a mixture of WURZER, FABER, BACCHUS, MULLER-THURGAU, SYLVANER and SCHEUREBE vines, and the soil is sandstone with pebbles.
The southern slope is a single vineyard where Riesling is grown.
Currently, his father and third son are helping Martin at his parents' home, and his eldest brother is currently undergoing training at another winery.
Martin's brother also plans to return to his family home in the future, and the four of them will convert all of the family's fields to pesticide-free, and he dreams of becoming even more devoted to natural wine.
Martin says he is grateful to his father for his generous support and for allowing him the freedom to try his hand at vineyards and winemaking. We have high hopes for this young artist who will continue to bring his ideas to life through winemaking.
