2018/ARBOIS SAVAGNIN

Region: Jura, France

Grape: Savagnin

Category: White

This is already a petit vin jaune...

The incredible flavors that come from careful oxidative aging , such as smoked almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts and spices, come flooding in like a raging tidal wave.
The 150 million year old marl soil perfectly expresses the finesse that can only be found in the unique Jura.

Aged oxidatively for 48 months in 225L barriques.

[Producer information]

The brewery's name comes from Fumay (his father's surname) and Châtelain (his mother's surname).
His grandparents were farmers who grew grains and raised dairy cows for Comté cheese, but in the mid- 80s , his parents, Raphaël and Adeline, started growing grapes. They initially made a living selling grapes (to Henri Maire, the largest Domaine in the Jura!).

In 1991 , a late frost damaged 95% of the Jura, bringing a setback to their business. However, they did not give up and decided to make their own wine with the few remaining grapes, which is how the Domaine began. They borrowed winemaking equipment from acquaintances and relatives (including Stephane!) and somehow managed to establish the Domaine.

After working hard since their first vintage in 1991, they finally achieved their dream of owning a winery in Montigny-les-Arsures, a village next to Arbois, in 1999. A few years ago, they purchased a vineyard from Stephan, and now they make wine on over 20 plots, a total of 17 hectares of subdivided vineyards, including Arbois!

Currently, the Domaine is led by his son, Maran. Having grown up helping his parents in the fields since he was a child, he naturally took up the path of winemaking.
After earning a degree from a winemaking school in Burgundy, Marin began helping his parents at the age of 19 .
He felt he needed to travel and study to find out what kind of wine he wanted to make, so he gained a lot of experience as a winemaker in Australia, South Africa and other countries.

About the field

The vineyard is located at an altitude of 300-400m and covers a total of 17 hectares , of which 80% is marl and 20% is limestone.
Like Stefan's field, it is composed of rocks from the Lias Stage of the Early Jurassic and the even older Triassic Period.
Since 2017, all of the Domaine's vineyards have been converted to organic farming.
Originally I wasn't interested in certification, but with Maran entering the market I thought I might as well take this opportunity... I am currently applying for organic certification and should receive it soon.

His winemaking mentors are his father and Stephane Tissot!

Maran's winemaking motto is to create "living wines that stir the soul."
He also told us that in the future he would like to grow fruit and grains, raise cows, and have the estate become more of a farm than a domaine.
The young winemaker, Maran, strives every day to create honest wine that tastes like the land, a product that can only be achieved by growing grapes that protect the natural environment!
