Rose vom opok 2021

Region: Austria, Styria

Grape: Zweigelt, Blauer Wildbacher, Blaufränkisch

Color: Rosé

Limited availability. Concentrated fruit flavor; this rosé is also outstanding.

The vines were planted in 1983, before global warming began, when red wine was still rare in this region. While the quality of red wine has improved everywhere due to recent global warming, the coolness of this area contributes to its delicate and complex character. It has been produced annually since 2014, when it was experimentally made during a year when fruit ripening was difficult.
Harvested and destemmed by hand, fermented in wooden barrels (old barrels used for about 20 years).
Aged in wooden barrels for approximately 14 months.

【Producer Information】

This producer can be considered a driving force behind Styria's global popularity.
They are also a member of "Schmecke das Leben," a group of edgy winemakers with a shared philosophy in the region, which includes Andreas Tscheppe, Werlitsch, and Strohmeier. They are close like family and constantly gather to exchange ideas.

In Leutschach, a village in Southern Styria, Austria, near the Slovenian border, lies the winery of Maria and Sepp Muster. The family has been working with grapes since their parents acquired the vineyards in 1978, a place recorded on 18th-century maps. Sepp, who grew up seeing vineyard work firsthand, studied theory at winemaking school, gained experience at various domaines, and joined the family business in 1990.
An accident in 1994 shook his worldview, leading him to discover biodynamic farming and implement it in the vineyards.

The vineyards are located in rolling hills where cool air and Mediterranean warmth intersect, with a marl soil rich in limestone (Opok soil). The vines are cultivated in a manner close to their natural state, with the utmost importance placed on maintaining the vitality of the soil and plants. In the cellar, winemaking is based on fermentation with wild yeasts and aging in wooden barrels, taking time to avoid excessive intervention. For them, wine is not something to be managed by numbers but a living, constantly evolving entity.
They believe that by stepping back and quietly observing the work of the land and life, the true individuality of the wine emerges.
