QUERCUS 2023

Region: Aragon, Spain

Grape: Garnacha, Miguel de Arco

Category: Red

I discovered a rich red wine that was perfect for me. I was amazed at how delicious it was on the second day.

The intense aroma of ripe black fruits is sure to pique your expectations.
It has a concentrated fruitiness of dried prunes and other fruits, with a refined nuance of barrel aging.
This addictive wine is packed with the charm of Miguel de Arco, a black grape native to Aragon.

It's rich and satisfying to drink, but not too heavy, and the tannins are soft, making it perfectly balanced.
I would like to drink it with charcoal grilled meat such as steak, yakiniku, and yakitori...

[Producer information]

In an area where large cooperatives stand side by side, we aim to reaffirm the value of grapes grown in this area and to help small growers and cellar owners achieve economic independence .
The project is led by Juambi, who comes from a family that originates from the village of Rubialesdemora.

Utilizing the experience gained through the cooperative and in-depth knowledge of each plot, they produce wines that express the characteristics of each area and the age of the vines.

Concerned about depopulation, the hard work farmers face, and economic instability, Juambi purchases grapes from contracted farmers through fair trade, aiming to preserve the cultivation tradition and help farmers become independent.
Made from high-quality Garnacha grapes grown by people who are born and live in this land, the wines are full of vitality, elegant and of true quality.

An inspiring wine and project that will ensure the survival and future of winemaking in Teruel, a forgotten land.

Project founder and winemaker "Fuambi"

Juambi was born to a family originally from Rubielos de Mora, in the city of Valencia, where his family had emigrated.
After completing his oenology studies there, he gained experience in Ribera del Duero, Chile, New Zealand, Australia, etc., and since 2010 he has worked as a oenologist in Calatayud, Aragon, as part of the cooperative "San Alejandro", which represents the DO Calatayud.

At the same time, he launched the project "RUBUS" to revive vineyards in the village of Rubiello, where his family once lived, and to produce wines born from the unique terroir.
Initially, the winery produced wine from young Garnacha and Tempranillo vines that they had planted themselves in the village of Rubielos de Mora.

Juambi's San Alejandro cooperative ranks vineyards into four categories, from A+ to B, to differentiate the purchase price of grapes and to reward quality and justify the work of growers.

Through his work with the Cooperative, he meets Menchol, a winegrower who owns the largest cultivated vineyard in the Gudar Mountains and grows grapes of exceptional quality.

Teruel's microclimate and cultivation traditions

The identity of RUBUS lies in the microclimate and cultivation traditions of Teruel. This old Garnacha has been growing for 80 years in dry fields with schist soil at an altitude of over 1,000m.
It is a cold region with the lowest temperature recorded in Spain, with a harsh climate and only 300 liters of rainfall per year. It is also prone to hail damage. The soil is made up of red clay rich in iron and crystalline schist.

In contrast to the stone-gray soil and the very dry, vegetation-less climate around the city of Zaragoza,
Teruel has little rainfall, but is surrounded by mountains and is lush with greenery, making it a stark contrast.
It is also a famous truffle producing region, and you can enjoy mushroom picking in the fall.

Old Garnacha trees are planted clinging to the slope of this mountain.
The farm was born and raised in Baguéna (Teruel province), a small village in the valley of Jiroca.
It is owned and managed by the living Menchol.
