L'abrunet Rosado 2023
Region: Catalonia, Spain
Grape: Garnacha Gris 40%, Garnacha Blanc 30%, Garnacha Tinta 30%
Color: Rosé
It's so good I had to double check the price. The naturalness is also impeccable.
Pale salmon pink in color, aromas of cherries, plums, acacia flowers, and red currants, and a pleasant, smooth mouthfeel make it so easy to drink that you'll find yourself gulping it down.
Not only is it great value , but the flavor and fruitiness are also excellent, making it extremely stable.
2023 was a cool, dry year. After harvesting, three Garnacha varieties with an average age of 40 years were fermented and pressed, then fermented and aged in 50hl stainless steel tanks. No SO2 added.
[Producer information]
DO Terr Alta in Spain is located in the Catalonia region, which has been the subject of worldwide attention due to the issue of independence. The area has a strong regional character and a strong sense of independence and national consciousness.
Mendar, a leading Spanish natural wine producer, is actually located very close to Frisach, but because it is a table wine, the DO name "Terra Alta" is not well known.
However, it is actually an area with great potential. It has a Mediterranean climate, but with many mountains and many fields at high altitudes, it also has some alpine aspects. With an annual rainfall of 400mm, it is a disease-free climate, perfect for growing crops without pesticides.
This winery is located in the small village of Corbera d'Ebre. It is famous for being heavily bombed during the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939, and the ruins have been turned into a secret tourist spot to remind people of that time. Many events are held in the church with its destroyed roof.
Born on September 5, 1987, Francesc Frisach began making wine in 2008. His family has been farming in this area for generations, dating back 200 to 300 years. They cultivated not only grapes but also other fruits without pesticides, with 20 hectares of vineyards on a 50 hectare plot. His father's family sold the grapes to a cooperative.
After graduating from the Faculty of Agriculture in Tarragona and starting to help out in the family business, Francesc decided to make wine instead of selling grapes. After tasting various wines, he realized that the best wines were natural wines, so he studied independently without going to an oenology school. One of his mentors was Laureano from Mendar.
What's interesting is that while lower-class casual wines use pumps, higher-class wines are fermented using only natural gravity without pumps. They also avoid using presses as much as possible. As a rule, no SO2 is added to higher-class wines. Every wine I tasted was lively, and I was surprised that such wonderful wines had not yet been imported to Japan!
In fact, most of his wines are extremely popular in the United States, and are exported almost exclusively to the United States. Because of the already limited supply, they have not made it to Japan. He is a wonderful young man with a keen sense of ingenuity. While there are a growing number of new winemakers in Spain, Francesc is by far the most outstanding. It will be exciting to see what kind of wines he will produce in the future.
