Riesling 2024

Region: Alsace, France

Grape: Riesling

Color: White

Julien Meillet, the genius of Alsace, has a history dating back to 1705.

A clear green-yellow color, it offers aromas of kabosu, grated apple, pear, and a hint of flint and soil. It has a fresh, popping attack, a dry, high acidity, and a rich fruit flavor that spreads easily down the throat.

The wine uses Riesling from the village of Saint Pierre, located close to National Route 422 (RN422).
Fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. Unfiltered and unfined.

[Producer information]

Located south of Strasbourg, the capital of Alsace, heading towards Colmar, is the village of Nothalten, with a lovely address on the Route du Vin (Wine Street).
Julien Meyer is a little-known winemaker who is well-known among biodynamic practitioners, but he dislikes magazines and other media and never appears in the media.

Of course, he is not even listed in the highly credible Classement. Given his level, he is a great winemaker who should be listed, but it is only natural that he is not listed because he has not sent samples. Just like how Prieure Roch is not listed, winemakers who do not need to advertise do not need to send samples.
I had heard rumors that this legendary winemaker was quite a difficult person. However, when I met him, I found that he was a completely different story: a scholarly and intelligent winemaker. In a time when biodynamic practitioners tend to focus on theory, I was constantly amazed by the way he combined theory with practice.
Of course, the wines he makes are simply amazing. He is apparently contacted by many famous sommeliers, famous restaurants, and wine critics, but he does not send samples of wine. And he does not sell wine to people he has not met.

Most people would be happy to send them. However, he says that although he is happy to introduce his wines to people who visit him in person, he would never send them by mail. This may seem like an orthodox opinion, but it is an ideal and is difficult to put into practice.
However, he has a policy of stubbornly continuing to do so, which has led to fanfare and even mysterious rumors about him, but in reality he is an open-minded person with a craftsman's spirit.

This historic winery dates back to 1705 and originally farmed almost exclusively using organic methods. In 1990, during his generation, they switched to completely organic farming, and in 1999, they switched to 100% biodynamic farming. Although he appears to be an honor student, he says he was a bad student who didn't study, but that drinking a lot of wine awakened him to winemaking. His wine is also exported to the United States, and Robert Parker has given it high praise. One of his greatest quotes is, "The winemaker rents the soil."
In the vast natural world, we are borrowing this very moment.
That's why you shouldn't do a sloppy job.
